Historic wedding venues always have such a story to tell. And, when it comes to wow-factor venues with a whole lot of history, it’s hard to beat Hodsock Priory. Sat on the edge of the Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire border, this luxury Midlands wedding venue has a fascinating past and the grand looks to match. One of Hodsock’s most iconic sights is the Tudor Gatehouse, providing a dramatic backdrop for outdoor wedding ceremonies and unique wedding photos.

The history of Hodsock Priory’s Tudor Gatehouse

Standing proud at the end of our kilometre-long drive, the Grade I listed Tudor Gatehouse is a scene-stealer. As the entrance to Hodsock Priory’s estate, it’s one of the first things your guests will see when they arrive for your wedding. And what a first impression!

Dating back to the 16th century, the Tudor Gatehouse is a later addition to Hodsock Priory. While the estate was owned by the Cressy family from around the mid 12th century for 200 years – hosting visits from King Henry II, King John and King Edward I during that time – it was when Hodsock Priory passed to the Clifton family through the marriage of Sir John Clifton and Catherine Cressy at the beginning of the 15th century that we first hear of the Gatehouse.

The Tudor Gatehouse was built by the then-owner of Hodsock, Sir Gervase Clifton – with evidence suggesting it was built to celebrate a royal visit. King Henry VIII visited Hodsock Priory in the summer of 1541 to bestow a knighthood on Sir Gervase. And what better way to impress than with such a statement build?

The Gatehouse and bridge are the oldest surviving structures on the estate, and one of three remaining Tudor brick-built buildings in the county. Want to see for yourself?
